Federer slaps favourite's tag on Djokovic
Roger Federer insists Novak Djokovic should be considered the favourite for the US Open despite cruising into the second round in style.
The world No. 1 barely broke a sweat as he eased past Donald Young 6-3 6-2 6-4 under the floodlights at Flushing Meadows.
Federer ended a 29-month wait for a major title at Wimbledon last month, and despite an impressive run of form that has seen him return to the top of the world rankings he does not feel he merits the favourite's tag.
The Swiss convincingly beat Djokovic in Cincinnati recently, but he insists defending champion Djokovic is the man to beat in New York.
"Novak to me goes in as the favourite still because he's the defending champion," said Federer, who is chasing a sixth US Open title. "He's probably won the most titles on hardcourts the last couple of years. It's where he felt most comfortable.
"He's beaten me the last couple of years as well. Then again, I've had a great summer. So has (Andy) Murray. It's going to be an interesting US Open. I'm happy I'm through the first round."
