Ninth seed Bondarenko eases through in Charleston

Ninth seed Alona Bondarenko breezed into the second round of the Family Circle Cup on a day of few shocks in Charleston.
Bondarenko was drawn against American Julie Ditty in her opening match and, despite dropping an early service game, she eased through 6-4 6-2 for a routine victory. The winner of Julia Goerges and Bethanie Mattek-Sands awaits in round two.
No. 12 seed Aleksandra Wozniak also progressed thanks to a hard fought 6-3 7-6(9) triumph over Lilia Osterloh. In a hugely even game that produced seven breaks of serve, Wozniak had to rely upon a lengthy tie-breaker to earn her place in the next round.
Unseeded dangerwoman Ayumi Morita remains in the hunt after an equally difficult encounter with Mariana Duque Marino. Morita has a habit of knocking out big-name seeds on the WTA Tour, but she was forced to knuckle down for three breaks of service in a 6-4 7-5 victory.
Also through to round two are Michelle Larcher De Brito, Catalina Castano, Christina McHale, Rossana De Los Rios, Sofia Arvidsson, Kai-Chen Chang, Angelique Kerber, Evgeniya Rodinov and Edina Gallovits.
In the first round of the Barcelona Open, fifth seed Sorana Cirstea was pushed all the way by a determined Tamira Paszek. Cirstea eventually triumphed 6-4 7-6(8) after nearly two hours against the Austrian world No. 264.
Elsewhere, Kristina Barrois overcame the challenge of Kirsten Flipkens 7-5 6-2.
