Top seed Caroline Wozniacki overcame an early wobble to win her opening match at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

Fresh from winning her first title of the year at Ponte Vedra Beach last week, Wozniacki extended her winning streak to beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-4 6-1. Wozniacki's second service game was broken and she fell 3-1 behind before rallying to wrap up victory in an hour and 19 minutes.

The world No. 2 will meet Patty Schnyder in the third round after the world No. 49 eased past Portuguese teenager Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-3 6-1.

Eighth seed Daniela Hantuchova was a set and a break up when her opponent Ayumi Morita retired with a thigh injury, while third seed Victoria Azarenka led Christina McHale 6-2 2-2 when she was struck down with a thigh strain.

Sixth seed Nadia Petrova cruised past America's Vania King 6-2 6-1 as Melanie Oudin got the better of Australian qualifier Sophie Ferguson.

Top seed Francesca Schiavone was the only seed to progress unscathed at the Barcelona Open following her 6-4 6-3 victory over fellow Italian Tathiana Garbin.

Following second seed Aravane Rezai's shock defeat on Tuesday, third seed Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, fourth seed Maria Kirilenko and No. 5 seed Soran Cirstea were all sent tumbling out at the second round stage.

Martinez Sanchez was stunned 7-5 3-6 7-5 by Spanish wildcard Arantxa Parra Santonja, while Kirilenko, herself a giantkiller at the Australian Open in January where she knocked out Maria Sharapova and Dinara Safina, was beaten 4-6 6-2 6-2 by Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova. Iveta Benesova got the better of Cirstea 6-1 6-4.
