Vera Zvonareva secured her place in the Family Circle Cup final as Caroline Wozniacki was forced to retire with an ankle injury.

Zvonareva was 4-2 to the good with the game well poised when the pair became embroiled in a superb point. Wozniacki chased down a superb drop shot from Zvonareva and as she stretched, her right ankle turned terribly.

The Dane went down immediately and clutched her ankle. She sat up in tears and was helped to her seat by the trainer.

Wozniacki received extensive treatment including the application of an ice pack. Strapping was applied to the ankle and the Dane, to her credit, picked up her racket and returned to court. She received a tremendous ovation from the Charleston crowd.

The Dane attempted to play on, but after serving a double fault she offered her hand to Zvonareva who suffered a similar injury in this event 12 months ago.

"I was surprised that I could stand on my leg, which was very positive, actually," Wozniacki said. "But as soon as I was moving to the sides, it was impossible, so I couldn't play."

Zvonareva will face Sam Stosur in the final after the Australian got the better of Daniela Hantuchova 6-3 7-6(2).

It was a topsy-turvy affair, as Stosur rattled through the first set 6-3 but looked set to concede the second as Hantuchova raced ahead. However, Stosur dug in to force a tie-break and overwhelmed her Slovakian opponent.
