Heather Watson's brave run at the US National Indoor Championships ended meekly at the hands of Stefanie Voegele in a 6-1 6-2 defeat.

The British No. 1 is 47 ranking places better off than Voegele but had no answer to the Swiss player in their quarter-final.

Watson has been out of sorts in Memphis but battled through two three set-matches to reach the last eight, clocking up a total of five hours and 20 minutes on court in the process.

In comparison Voegele only had three hours and 12 minutes in her legs and dusted off Watson in just 53 minutes.

Watson's first serve percentage was considerably better than Voegele's but she could not bank enough points off it, succeeding in winning only 47% of the first serves she hit. Her opponent meanwhile won 87% of the points on the rare occasions she could find her first-serve range.

World No. 89 Voegele has now set up a semi-final match with New Zealand's Marina Erakovic, after the Croatian-born player beat American Jamie Hampton 7-5 6-2.
