British No. 1 Heather Watson is through to the second round of the US Indoor Championships after beating Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva 7-5 5-7 7-6(4).

The match was something of a marathon for both players with Watson stopping the clock by taking the third set tie-break at three hours and 25 minutes.

The Guernsey resident could have have saved herself some of that gruelling time on court but failed to convert five of her eight break point chances which led to her letting a 5-2 lead slip in the final set.

Watson is seeded fourth in Memphis while her opponent was the world No. 109, more than double the Briton's ranking of 41.

Her hard-fought win sets up a second round tie against either American Melanie Oudin or Czech Andrea Hlavackova.
