Sam Stosur set up a quarter-final clash with world No. 3 Venus Williams after a clinical 7-6(3) 6-2 victory over Patty Schnyder at the Madrid Open.

The eighth seed extended her impressive run to 14 wins from her last 15 matches as she proved too strong for the world No. 48, who had knocked out eighth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round.

After the first set went to a tie-breaker, the second set was more comfortable for Stosur, who wrapped up victory with a third break of serve to move into the last eight, where she will meet the fourth seeded Williams.

Stosur has never beaten the seven-time Grand Slam champion in their three previous meetings, but the Australian is flying high after her victory in Charleston and a final appearance in Stuttgart.

"What can I say? It's Venus," she said. "You have to expect a good match. Clay is not her favourite surface, so I have to give it my best shot. I'm happy with the way I'm playing, so whatever happens, happens.

"I'm enjoying my tennis; it's just one of those things. Once you start winning it doesn't matter, which surface it's on, it gives you confidence."

Jelena Jankovic continues to look in fearsome form ahead of the French Open after she breezed past Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-2 6-0 in a little over an hour. World No. 4 Jankovic, who has now emerged victorious on each of the six occasions she has played the Spaniard, looks as though she will take some stopping as she bids for her second WTA Tour title of the season.

Na Li moved into the last eight with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Caroline Wozniacki's victor Alona Bondarenko. The No. 13 piled pressure on the Ukrainian's serve, carving out 18 break point opportunities as she booked her quarter-final spot against Shahar Peer.

Aravane Rezai moved into the last eight with a 6-4 7-6(8) triumph over Andrea Petkovic. "I like fighting like I did today and asking questions of myself," Rezai said. "It gives me a lot of confidence to win matches with a tiebreak like that. I could have won more easily but she played well in the important points."
