Wozniacki crashes out as Stosur survives

World No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki slumped to her third defeat in four matches as she crashed out of the Madrid Open after a lacklustre performance against world No. 26 Alona Bondarenko.
The second seed, a finalist in the Spanish capital last year, was outplayed from the outset by the Ukrainian, who broke the No. 2 seed's serve five times as she wrapped up a 6-2 6-3 victory in under an hour and 20 minutes.
But the Dane, who was forced to retire from Charleston with an ankle injury last month, was confident she would be back to full fitness for the French Open in two weeks.
"I'm never happy to lose a match," she said. "I'll be back on the practice courts tomorrow and work my butt off and hopefully it'll come back. If you've twisted your ankle a few times like I have you need to get your confidence back. It's especially important on clay where you need to slide and the surface is uneven. I really think I am going to be okay for the French Open."
Another big name to tumble in the early stages was No. 6 seed Elena Dementieva who was stunned by Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru. The world No. 38, who claimed the scalp of defending champion Dinara Safina in Rome last week, capitalised on the Russian's weak serve to continue her impressive run with a 6-1 3-6 7-5 victory.
Eighth seed Sam Stosur survived a tight first set against Rome champion Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez before securing her place in the third round with a 7-6(2) 6-4 win. Stosur will meet Switzerland's Patty Schnyder in the third round after the world No. 48 came out on top in a marathon tussle with No. 9 seed Agnieszka Radwanska.
The Pole gave Schnyder the run around early on as she claimed the first set 6-3, but the Swiss right-hander fought back in impressive style and hit a string of angled backhand winners to set seal on a 3-6 6-4 6-4 victory.
No. 16 seed Nadia Petrova took out the dangerous Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who disposed of former world No. 5 Daniela Hantuchova in the first round, in a ruthless 6-2 7-5 win.
Petrova was in complete control from the outset as she broke her fellow Russian's serve twice in the first set and responded well to suffering a blip on her own serve early in the second by gaining two further breaks to secure a third-round date with No. 1 seed Serena Williams.
Israel's Shahar Peer, who recently reached the semi-final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, served impeccably as she beat Alisa Kleybanova 7-6(4) 6-0, while Anabel Medina Garrigues thumped 2007 Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli 6-2 6-0.
Elsewhere in the second round, Maria Sharapova's first-round conqueror Lucie Safarova recovered from losing the first set to knock out Olga Govortsova 4-6 6-2 7-5, while Andrea Petkovic saw off Italy's Flavia Pennetta 7-6(3) 6-3.
