Fabio Fognini caused a real shock by dumping Gael Monfils out of the French Open with a 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-4 9-7 win.
The game was carried over from the previous evening, when the tournament officials attempted to play the match to a conclusion in near darkness. The events of Wednesday night caused Fognini some distress and he came out with a positive attitude, as he produced some sparkling hitting from the back of the court to take the opening game. Monfils had a break point in game 13 but he netted a makeable forehand and Fognini stood firm to hold.
The Italian refused to wilt and held his serve to move 8-7 ahead and earned a match point when Monfils threw a forehand long. The forehand proved to be the undoing of the Frenchman as he pushed a shot into the net as the Italian caused a real shock and duly silenced the partisan crowd on Chatrier.
Andy Roddick shrugged off the loss of the second set to defeat Blaz Kavcic 6-3 5-7 6-4 6-2. The No. 6 seed was tested at times, but found his stride in the fourth set to wrap up his place in the third round.
John Isner joined his fellow American Roddick in the third round with a 6-7(3) 7-6(3) 7-6(7)6-4 win over Marco Chiudinelli, while Mardy Fish is locked together at a set all with Ivan Ljubicic.
Teimuraz Gabashvili was a comfortable 6-3 6-1 6-1 winner over Grega Zemlja, while Marcos Baghtatis eased into the third round with a 4-6 6-1 7-5 6-2 win over Marcel Granollers.
