French Open winner Francesca Schiavone will not be sealing back-to-back Grand Slam titles after her participation in Wimbledon was cut short by Vera Dushevina.

The fifth seed was a quarter-finalist at the All England Club in 2009, and her success at Roland Garros in May appeared to augur well for her chances of going better this year.

It was not to be, however, as Dushevina shrugged off the disappointment of being edged out in the first set to romp to a 6-7 7-5 6-1 triumph. Schiavone produced 33 unforced errors - close to twice as many as her opponent - as she struggled to recapture the form that has seen her race up the world rankings in 2010.

Five-time champion Venus Williams looks a good bet for a sixth title after she issued an unequivocal statement of intent by storming past Rossana de los Rios. The tie was expected to be one-sided - de los Rios has four first-round exits at SW19 to her name - and so it proved, Williams barely breaking sweat on her way to a 6-3 6-2 success.

No. 8 seed Kim Clijsters looked as if she had never been away as she marked her return to Wimbledon with a confident victory. Making her first appearance at the All England Club since 2006, where she lost to Justine Henin in the semi-finals, Clijsters needed just 65 minutes to dispatch Maria Elena Camerin 6-0 6-3.

Clijsters will now meet Croatia's Karolina Sprem after a 6-3 6-4 victory over Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Justine Henin maintained her unbeaten run on grass in 2010 by sealing her first win at Wimbledon since 2007 against Anastasija Sevastova. The Belgian, who scooped the Unicef Open earlier this month, struck 24 winners during a mere 59 minutes of on-court action.

Ana Ivanovic's fall from the summit of the women's game continued apace as she sank to a limp 6-3 6-4 defeat against Shahar Peer. The former world No. 1, who has not been past the round of 64 in a Grand Slam this year, continues to desperately scramble around for a run of form that would provide her with a foothold from which to launch a recovery bid.

Meanwhile, No. 12 seed Nadia Petrova will meet Yung-Jan Chan in the round of 64 after the Russian eased past Tatiana Malek 6-4 6-3, while Chan stunned Patty Schnyder 6-0 6-2.

Shenay Perry outlasted Belarus' Anastasiya Yakimova 6-2 4-6 9-7 to book her place in round two, while No. 21 seed Vera Zvonareva eased to a comfortable 6-4 6-1 victory over Nuria Llagostera Vives . There were also wins for seeds Yaroslava Shvedova, Maria Kirilenko and Alisa Kleybanova.
