Wozniacki becomes latest Wimbledon casualty

Caroline Wozniacki suffered a shock straight-sets exit as unseeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova picked up her second big Wimbledon scalp to reach the quarter-finals.

Zahlavova Strycova, the world No.43, sent second seed Li Na packing on Friday and followed it up with a 6-2 7-5 win over 16th seed Wozniacki on Court 12.

The Czech knocked a seed out for the third straight match, having beaten Elena Vesnina in the second round and recorded her first win over Wozniacki at the fourth attempt.

She will meet either 2011 champion Petra Kvitova or Peng Shuai in the quarter-finals.

• Caroline Wozniacki has added to the growing clamour for a basketball-style shot clock during matches to ensure players don't take too much time between points.
• Seven-time Wimbledon men's champion Roger Federer said last week he thinks a clock might eventually be introduced because the 20-second rule in grand slams and 25-second limit in other tournaments was being abused.
• Now former women's world No.1 Wozniacki has echoed his sentiments, suggesting Barbora Zahlavova Strycova might have been playing longer than the 20 seconds allowed between points during their match on Monday.
• "I thought she was very slow," Wozniacki said. "But I guess the referee, she has the time on it. If she's within the time, I guess it's OK.
• "I wouldn't mind [a shot clock]. You have a clock. It shows exactly how much time you take in between points."
• Zahlavova Strycova said if she was taking too much time, she should have been warned.
• "The referee would tell me speed up or hurry up on your serve, I would maybe change it," she said. "But I didn't get any warning or something like that, so I was just following the rhythm I had."

Wozniacki clawed her way back on serve in the second set after suffering an early break and then fought off two match points at 5-4 down to hold.

Zahlavova Strycova wasted a third match point on Wozniacki's next service with a wide return before the Dane dug in to defend a fourth and a fifth.

However, Wozniacki then double faulted before planting a backhand wide to hand Zahlavova Strycova the win after 95 minutes.

Serena Williams' early exit on Saturday means that for the first time in the Open Era, the top two women's seeds have lost before the last 16 at Wimbledon.

Williams' conqueror, Alize Cornet, couldn't replicate her performance from Saturday as she was beaten 7-6(5) 7-5 on Centre Court by Eugenie Bouchard, who has reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time.

Meanwhile, 2013 runner-up Sabine Lisicki booked her place in the fourth round with a 6-4 3-6 6-1 victory over 11th seed Ana Ivanovic on No.1 Court, sealing the win after one hour and 50 minutes with a love service game.

Lisicki will face Yaroslava Shvedova, who progressed after Madison Keys withdrew from their to-be-finished match due to a left-thigh injury on Monday morning, with the score at 7-6(7) 6-6.

Elsewhere, Lucie Safarova beat Tereza Smitkova 6-0 6-2 to reach her first grand slam quarter-final since the 2007 Australian Open, where she upset defending champion Amelie Mauresmo.

Safarova takes on Ekaterina Makarova next, after she sent Agnieszka Radwanska packing with a quick 6-3 6-0 win in 53 minutes.
