Roger Federer took just 52 minutes to seal his spot in the third round of the Rogers Cup on his first outing since losing the Wimbledon final.

Canadian wild card Peter Polansky was Federer's victim, going down 6-2 6-0 on home soil in Toronto as he failed to pull off another shock having ousted big-serving Pole Jerzy Janowicz in the first round.

It was the perfect way for Federer to kick off his hard-court preparations for the US Open as he goes about putting his epic five-sets defeat to Novak Djokovic at the All England Club last month behind him.

The only threat to world No.3 Federer here was complacency. "You never know when it can shift," said 17-time grand slam champion Federer, who is looking for an 80th career title. "You feel a little bit and then you end up losing the match.

"I was happy, I started well and that's always helpful to play more freely. I think I could have served better at times but other than that, already in practice I felt I was moving well.

"Didn't feel so good hitting the ball yet. Wasn't quite getting used to the surface and now the last few days have been much better and I'm happy that in the match it kind of all worked really well.

"For the start of a tournament it's never clear if that's going to be the case. I'm very relieved and just really pleased."

Federer's fellow Swiss, Stanislas Wawrinka, didn't have things so easy in his bid to reach the third round and was made to battle to a 4-6 6-3 7-6(2) win over Frenchman Benoit Paire.

Elsewhere, Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios, who conquered Rafael Nadal in the last 16 at Wimbledon, set up a second-round meeting with Andy Murray on Wednesday by beating Santiago Giraldo 7-6(3) 7-5.

In other results, Ernests Gulbis didn't give up a single break point as he saw off Joao Sousa 6-3 6-4 while Fabio Fognini beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-4 6-3.

Tommy Robredo moved past Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3 7-6(3) with Gael Monfils beating Radek Stepanek 6-3 7-5 and Yen-Hsun Lu edging Marcel Granollers 7-6(6) 7-5.
