Caroline Wozniacki wore down Maria Sharapova to win in three sets at the US Open and reach to a grand slam quarter-final for the first time in more than two years.

Wozniacki beat the five-time major champion 6-4 2-6 6-2 in two hours and 37 minutes on a steamy Sunday in New York.

Sharapova received a time violation warning when she came back to the court too late from the break before the final set. Wozniacki later complained to the chair umpire that her opponent was taking too long between points.

The 10th-seeded Wozniacki, who plans to return to the city in two months to run the marathon, looked far fresher than Sharapova, who is usually the one outlasting foes.

"This means so much to me," she said. "It's been a bit up and down this year so to come here and get the better of Maria means a lot."

When asked if she would be marathon training on Sunday afternoon following her win, she added with a smile: "I deserve to have some chocolate!"

With the fifth-seeded Sharapova's loss, No.1 Serena Williams is the only woman left in the top six.

Wozniacki will take Sara Errani in the last eight after the Italian edged Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-3 2-6 6-0.
