Second seed Caroline Wozniacki edged past Patty Schnyder 7-5 7-5 to book a place in the third round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The Dane, a recent winner in her home town of Copenhagen, improved her career record to 4-1 against the Swiss veteran, largely thanks to her aggressive power game from the back of the court.

Both players lost their serve in the opening set but it was Wozniacki who made the most of her chances to sneak it. The contest ebbed and flowed again in the second before the world No. 2 finally prevailed to set up a third round tie with Flavia Pennetta.

Pennetta, the 15th seed, proved too strong for Russia's Alisa Kleybanova. The Italian earned two breaks of serve in each set to record a 6-3 6-3 victory.

Kim Clijsters suffered a fright against American qualifer Bethanie Mattek-Sands, dropping the first set before rallying to a 4-6 6-4 6-3 victory. The 101-ranked Mattek-Sands asked as many questions of the world No. 4, who broken at least once in each set, but Clijsters' return got her out of a potential mess in the end.

There was a minor upset when former world No. 1 Dinara Safina beat fellow Russian Nadia Petrova 7-5 4-6 6-4 in a little over two and a half hours. Safina has dropped to No. 70 in the world due to a lack of form and injuries but the 2008 champion came through for only her fourth win in her last 12 matches.

Sixth seed Francesca Schiavone put on a gutsy display to hold off a strong challenge from Ekaterina Makarova. After taking the first set, the Italian lost a tight second before bouncing back in style to win the third set 6-2.

Fourth seed Elena Dementieva toppled Klara Zakopalova with relative ease, while Agnieszka Radwanska impressed en route to her victory over American Vania King.

No. 10 and 11 seeds Victoria Azarenka and Svetlana Kuznetsova both made it through with straight-sets wins over Maria Kirilenko and Timea Bacsinszky.
