Juan Martin Del Potro has revealed he is back in training but he confirmed that he will be absent from the 2010 US Open.

Del Potro is the reigning US Open champion after he defeated Roger Federer to claim his first career Grand Slam title, but he has missed the majority of the 2010 season due to wrist surgery.

The Argentinian revealed in July that he is targeting the Thailand Open as a potential return date, and he may even be on course to return ahead of the September 25 event. In a statement designed to express his frustration at being unable to defend his US Open crown, Del Potro revealed he is now back out on the courts testing the wrist.

"I feel extremely sad to announce that I will not to be able to defend my US Open title," the 21-year-old told www.atpworldtour.com. "Winning in New York last year has been my major accomplishment in tennis and my best memory so far.

"I am so sorry for my fans, my sponsors and all the people that care about me, but I have only started practising in the last two weeks and unfortunately I cannot compete at the top level yet.

"I look forward to returning to New York in 2011 and wish all the best to the tournament organisers and my fellow players."
