Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will make his long-awaited return to action at the Thailand Open in Bangkok next week.

The Argentinian, who has been sidelined with a wrist injury since January, had surgery on his right wrist at the beginning of May. He has slipped to No. 35 in the world rankings following his eight-month absence.

Del Potro, who reached a career-high No. 4 shortly before his injury, had hoped to return in time to defend his US Open title in new York, but was forced to withdraw in August after it became clear he would not be fit in time.

"I am extremely happy to tell you: I WILL PLAY AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! Will be in the BANGKOK tournament next Monday. Thanks so much for everything!" del Potro posted on his Twitter page.
