Andy Murray has been drawn against Lukas Lacko in the first round of the US Open.

The British No. 1 is flying high following his Rogers Cup victory in Toronto a fortnight ago, and will face the Slovakian world No. 72 for the first time at Flushing Meadows.

Murray could meet 25th seed Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round, with Sam Querrey a potential fourth round opponent. Tomas Berdych, who beat Murray at the French Open. could lie in wait in the quarter-finals.

Murray is in the top half of the draw, meaning he could face top seed Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals, but would avoid five-time champion Roger Federer until the final.

Top seed Nadal, bidding to complete his career Grand Slam, has never reached the final in New York, and he comes up against world No. 98 Teymuraz Gabashvili in round one, while five-time champion Federer plays Argentina's Brian Dabul.

In the women's draw, former champions Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova are in the same quarter of the draw as top seed Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki could face 2006 champion Sharapova in the fourth round and 2004 champion Kuznetsova in the quarter-finals.

First up for British No. 1 Elena Baltacha is Croatia's Petra Martic, in a repeat of the match-up in the opening round at Wimbledon. Baltacha was a set and 5-3 up before falling 2-6 7-5 6-3.

Fellow Brit Anne Keothavong will meet Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan in the first round.
