British No. 1 Elena Baltacha overcame wildcard So-Jung Kim 6-3 6-4 to book her place in the second round of the Korea Open.

The 27-year-old, who moved into the world's top 50 for the first time in her career last week, was not at her best but saved six break points during a dogged display to ensure she progressed.

The Scot will meet either Agnes Szavay or Polona Hercog in the last 16. Nadia Petrova, the world No. 19, is the top seed, with former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic also among the field in Seoul.

Katie O'Brien was in action in Tashkent but her interest in the competition came to an end in the first round as the Brit was beaten 7-5 6-2 by Ekaterina Ivanova.

Meanwhile, Belgium came from behind to beat Australia 3-2 to return to the Davis Cup World Group.
