Australian No. 2 Peter Luczak provided the shock of the first round at the Movistar Open in Chile, upsetting eighth seed Potito Starace 7-6(3) 6-4.

In the first clay-court event of the year, local stars Nicolas Massu and Jorge Aguilar both fell in the first round. Two-time Olympic gold medallist Massu was beaten by second seed Juan Monaco 6-3 6-4. The 2008 finalist will now face fellow Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela, who beat Chilean wildcard Aguilar.

Spanish duo Marcel Granollers and Alberto Martin both made it through to the second round. World No. 112 Granollers had the easier route after his Argentine opponent Martin Vassallo Arguello retired with a left ankle injury with the match level at one set each. Martin was forced to battle from a set down to beat Brazilian Marcos Daniel 6-7(5) 7-5 6-4.

Meanwhile, at the Zagreb Indoor tournament, third seed Jurgen Melzer progressed through to the second round with a straight-sets victory over Germany's Daniel Brands.

The Austrian put a shock first-round defeat to Florent Serra in the Australian Open behind him, dispatching the world No. 93 6-4 6-3 in a little over a hour and a half. He will now face Belgium's Olivier Rochus who needed three sets to beat Igor Kunitsyn 4-6 6-2 7-5.

Wildcard Ivan Dodig provided the Zagreb crowds with plenty to cheer about as the world No. 153 upset eighth seed Evgeny Korolev 7-6(9) 6-4.

At the South African Open torrential rain delayed play in Johannesburg. After a lengthy delay, home favourite Rik de Voest won a first-set tie-breaker against fifth seed Rajeev Ram, but the American came through to win 6-7(3) 6-3 6-3. Ram will now face the winner of the match between German Bjorn Phau and South African qualifier Fritz Wolmarans.
