Andy Murray has moved up one place into third position in the ATP Rankings following the Australian Open, where he lost in the final to Roger Federer.

Federer remains No. 1, his 268th week in that position - which puts him just 18 weeks away from Pete Sampras' record of time spent at the summit of the rankings, while Serena Williams, also a winner in Melbourne, tops the WTA list for the 15th successive week.

Novak Djokovic trails the Swiss player as No. 2, while Rafael Nadal - forced to retire in Australia at the quarter-final stage due to an injury that will sideline him for a month - falls two places to fourth, his lowest position since June 2005. Marin Cilic, vanquished by Murray in the semi-finals, climbs four to place tenth.

On the women's side Dinara Safina is seeded second despite an injury-provoked fourth round retirement in Australia, with Caroline Wozniacki third and Svetlana Kuznetsova fourth. Li Na, defeated in the Melbourne semis, becomes the first Chinese player to enter the top ten by rising by seven in the list to reach No. 10.

Justine Henin, who returned from a two-year retirement to finish runner-up to Williams at the year's first Grand Slam, needs to play another tournament before receiving an official ranking.
