Baltacha storms up the rankings after Michigan victory

British No. 1 Elena Baltacha has stormed up the women's rankings after her eighth career title in Michigan.

Baltacha recovered from losing the first set to beat top seed Lucie Hradecka 5-7 6-2 6-3 in the final of the Midland $100,000 tournament to claim her biggest career victory and see her rise 13 places to 70th in the world rankings.

After reaching the top 100 for the first time in September last year, Baltacha won the ITF $75,000 tournament in Shrewsbury to end the year at 87. The Ukrainian-born Scot enjoyed a terrific start to 2010, reaching the third round of the Australian Open before falling to second seed Dinara Safina to see her rise to 83.

Baltacha is in action this week at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship in Memphis, where she is seeded eighth. Also in action in Memphis is Britain's Katie O'Brien, who dropped from 84 to 92 in the rankings.

Flavia Pennetta was the only mover in the top 20, after reaching the semi-finals in Paris, the Italian overtook Australia's Sam Stosur to move up to 11th.

Meanwhile in the men's rankings, Andy Murray dropped back down to fourth as Rafael Nadal moved up to third behind Rotterdam semi-finalist Novak Djokovic. While Murray has pulled out of this week's Open 13 event in Marseille, Nadal is still recovering from a knee injury, but has moved up a place as the rankings are based on a 12-month cycle.
