Wozniacki handed easy route to Pan Pacific semis

No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki will be well rested for the semi-finals of the Pan Pacific Open after her opponent retired on Thursday.
Wozniacki, the world No. 2, faced a potentially tough tie against sixth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the last eight of the competition, but the match lasted only 29 minutes. Trailing 5-0 in the first set, Radwanska called a halt to proceedings due to injury, bringing a disappointing end to a highly anticipated match.
The pair's head-to-head record had previously stood at 2-1 in Wozniacki's favour, and Radwanska had not dropped a set in Tokyo. However, her withdrawal means Wozniacki will now be in perfect shape for the semi-finals.
Victoria Azarenka will provide the Dane's opposition after she breezed past Coco Vandeweghe 6-2 6-1. Azarenka, seeded eighth in the tournament, produced a display of big-hitting to chalk up five unanswered breaks of serve.
In the other side of the draw, French Open champion Francesca Schiavone came through a three-hour battle with Kaia Kanepi to reach the last four. Schiavone eventually triumphed 7-5 4-6 7-5 in a match that saw 15 breaks of serve.
The Italian has never been the best at starting points, winning only 55 percent when her first serve found its target. However, it is Schiavone's all-round game that excels, and her ability to pull out winners off either wing eventually made the difference.
Schiavone faces Elena Dementieva in the semi-finals after the Russian defeated No. 2 seed Vera Zvonareva. In a match that saw 11 breaks of serve, Dementieva's returning ability proved decisive as she won 20 of 29 points on the Zvonareva second serve.
