Caroline Wozniacki insists that winning trophies is more important than becoming world No. 1 as she closes in on Serena Williams at the top of the world rankings.

Wozniacki's fifth title of the year at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo saw to within striking distance of the world No. 1, who has been out of action with a foot injury since July.

Williams, who has not recovered in time to play in this week's China Open, could be usurped as the world No. 1 should Wozniacki reach the quarter-finals or better in Beijing. But the 20-year-old insists that the top ranking is not her main priority.

"The No. 1 ranking is something that has always been a goal for me," said Wozniacki. "But I'm just so focused on winning a tournament I'm playing. Right now I just want to celebrate this victory. It's really a great feeling for me.

"Next week, I'm just going to see what's going to happen. I'm going to try to make it far there as well. But time will tell.I know that media is writing about it quite a lot. But for me, I'm young, 20 years old, so I have a lot of time ahead of me, a lot of matches.Every time I'm going into a tournament, I want to win it, so that's my main goal. I don't really think about the ranking."

French Open champion Francesca Schiavone moved up to sixth following her semi-final showing in Tokyo, while Maria Sharapova slipped outside the top 20 after her opening-round defeat to local hero Kimiko Date Krumm.

In the men's rankings, Malaysian Open champion Mikhail Youzhny moved up to eighth at Fernando Verdasco's expense, while Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who won his first title of the year at the Thailand Open, moved up to 39th.
