David Ferrer remains in the hunt to clinch his place at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London after beating Robin Soderling 6-3 3-6 6-3 to reach the final of the Valencia Open.

Soderling came into the contest with an 8-3 record over Ferrer, but the Swede threw in an unusually scrappy display. After being broken early to lose the opening set, Soderling caught fire in the second and threatened to run away with the contest. But his serve let him down when it mattered in the final set and two breaks were enough to secure Ferrer a place in the final.

"I had three very good matches this week - a semi-final is good," Soderling said. "Today was a good match as well and he played very well. You can't win every tournament. I will learn from this - I only have two tournaments left this season so I want to do well in them."

Ferrer started the week in eighth place in the race to the O2 and the points on offer in Valencia will strengthen his hand.

Ferrer will face Marcel Granollers in Sunday's final after the Spaniard showed great all-round court craft in his victory over Gilles Simon.
