Robin Soderling will overtake Andy Murray in the world rankings after claiming his first Masters title in Paris.

The Swede will rise to a career-high No. 4 in Monday's rankings following his 6-1 7-6(1) victory over Gael Monfils.

Monfils saved five match points on his way to his semi-final victory over top seed Roger Federer on Saturday night, and his exploits looked to have taken their toll as the world No. 14 struggled in the opening stages.

Monfils won just 14 points as he surrendered the opening set in under 27 minutes. Having fallen to Novak Djokovic in last year's final, the Frenchman was determined to go one better, urged on by a partisan French crowd.

He settled into his serve in the second set, but Soderling responded with a series of pinpoint passing shots. After neither player was able to find a way through, the second set went to a tie-break, and Soderling ripped through to claim his second title of the year and the €450,000 winner's cheque.

He now heads to London for the ATP World Tour Finals, which start on November 21.
