Roger Federer is excited by his forthcoming contest with Andy Murray at the ATP World Tour Finals, admitting the pair have mirrored each other's form this season.

Federer beat David Ferrer 6-1 6-4 at the O2 Arena on Sunday to get his round-robin campaign off to a flyer. Next up is Murray on Tuesday afternoon, after the British No. 1 dominated Robin Soderling.

Murray has won the two most recent encounters between the pair, in the finals at Shanghai and Toronto, and he holds an 8-5 winning record over the world No. 2 overall. However, Federer beat Murray in the Australian Open final, he has never lost to his rival in a grand slam, and he defeated the Scot in the same competition last year.

The duo have already shared three finals this season, and Federer expects a classic on Tuesday with both players on top of their game in London.

"We've played each other a couple of times just recently and he was able to win those," Federer told Sky Sports 2. "He's been playing well at the same times that I have. In Australia, then in Shanghai... where else did we play? I don't remember. But he beat me anyway!

"Here we go again; it's a repeat of last year, which I was able to win. He's playing well; I'm playing well, so I'm excited about the match."

Federer's victory over Ferrer means he has now won 30 of 34 matches since being dumped out of Wimbledon by Tomas Berdych. The former world No. 1 appears to be returning to his best form, and he has his eye on a fifth year-end title this week.

"My season has been good [since Wimbledon], I've only reached semis, finals and tournament victories," he said. "We've got one left, let's see what happens."
