Australian Open men's round-up:
Federer classy as Davydenko crashes out

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki opened her Australian Open campaign with a confidence-boosting victory over Gisela Dulko to progress to the second round in Melbourne.

Wozniacki, on the hunt for a maiden grand slam title, was pushed all the way by Dulko, but the Argentine was no match for the world No. 1, whose powerful baseline shots cancelled out Dulko's netplay.

A solitary break handed the top seed the opening set, and she carried her momentum into the second with an early break. Dulko battled hard to level the scores at 4-4 in the second, but threw it away immediately to hand Wozniacki the chance to serve for a 6-3 6-4 victory. Wozniacki will now face Vania King in the second round after the American beat Tamira Paszek 6-7(4) 6-0 6-3.

Former champion Justine Henin survived a scare in her opening match before beating Sania Mirza 5-7 6-3 6-1 to advance to the second round. Henin, who reached the final in Melbourne in only her second comeback tournament last year, failed to assert her authority on the match in the early stages.

She squandered set point in the opener as Mirza made the most of her opportunities to win the opening set. But Henin rallied in the second set, and dominated the decider to set up a second-round clash with British No. 1 Elena Baltacha.

Fourth seed Venus Williams eased into the second round with a 6-3 6-2 win over Sara Errani. In the absence of her sister, last year's winner Serena, Venus is the top-seeded American in the draw, and she opened her match with an ace, and sealed the victory with her eighth ace of the match.

Maria Sharapova overcame a shaky start to move into the second round with a 6-1 6-3 win over Tamarine Tanasugarn in the opening match on centre court on Monday. The former world No. 1, who won the title in 2008, lost her opening service game to love, but recovered to ease to a routine win.

Eighth seed Victoria Azarenka dropped just 10 points on her serve as she cruised into the second round with a 6-0 6-2 win over Germany's Kathrin Woerle. French Open champion Francesca Schiavone had to battle from a set down to beat Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-7(4) 6-2 6-4, while last year's semi-finalist Li Na beat Sofia Arvidsson 6-1 7-5.
