Britain's Elena Baltacha continued her impressive run of form with a first round victory over Renata Voracova at the Cellular South Cup in Memphis.

The eighth seed, who moved up to a career-high 70th in the world rankings this week after victory in Michigan last week, beat the Slovakian 7-5 6-1 She will now meet Canadian qualifier Valerie Tetreault in the second round, with a potential clash with top seed Maria Sharapova awaiting in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, fourth seed Lucie Hradecka was the second seed to tumble after Anne Keothavong pulled off an upset to knock out No. 6 seed Kristina Barrois on Monday. Hradecka failed to create a single break point opportunity as she fell 6-4 6-4 to Croatia's Karolina Sprem.

Second-seed Melanie Oudin was among those on court, although not for too long as she cruised past fellow American Alexa Glatch 6-2 6-2.

In the men's draw, Frenchman Jeremy Chardy shocked second-seed Fernando Verdasco to send the world No.11 crashing out at the first hurdle. Verdasco beat Andy Roddick in the final of the SAP Open on Sunday, but he couldn't muster so much as a break point in a 7-6 6-3 loss to Chardy, who lost his four previous matches this year.

It wasn't the best of days for the seeds, with Philipp Kohlschreiber also exiting after a solid showing in SAP Open, this time at the hands of Evgeny Korolev 7-5 7-5. The 22-year-old Russian overcame a 0-4 record against Kohlschreiber to register the straight sets win, in which he served ten aces.

Fifth-seed Tomas Berdych had no such troubles, taking out local hope Ryan Sweeting 6-2 6-1 in just under an hour. Czech star Berdych could be eyeing up a successful tournament now that some of the bigger names have gone out.
