Watson makes last eight in Memphis

British rising star Heather Watson progressed to the quarter-finals of the Memphis Open with a three-set victory over fellow qualifier Stephanie Foretz-Gacon.
After losing to the French youngster in a final set tie-break in Missouri last weekend, the 18-year-old avoided a repeat performance with a crucial break at the death, ultimately clinching victory 6-2 5-7 6-4.
In a match that lasted over two hours, Watson converted 75 per cent of her break points to give herself a crucial advantage that narrowly saw her over the line - and ensured she will likely see a vast improvement on her current No. 145 ranking when the new list is announced.
Watson will face Evgeniya Rodina in the last eight, after the Russian defeated Melanie Oudin 6-1 7-5 on the indoor court.
Elsewhere, Sandra Zahlavova was beaten by Lucie Hradecka 6-4 6-3 in an all-Czech clash, and American Coco Vandeweghe saw off compatriot Alexandra Stevenson in fairly straightforward fashion, 6-2 6-2.
Watson, meanwhile, is set to face either Melanie Oudin or Evgeniya Rodina, who will meet later on Wednesday evening.
