Watson fails to qualify for the Monterrey Open

Britain's Heather Watson has failed to progress to the main draw for the Monterrey Open after crashing out in the second round of qualifying to Lucie Hradecka 5-7 6-2 6-2.

Watson, who reached the quarter-finals of the Memphis Open two weeks ago, battled past Catalina Castano 2-6 7-6(5) 6-0 on Saturday but she couldn't repeat her heroics against Hradecka.

In the opening set, both players had multiple chances to break, with Watson the more clinical - although she only managed to convert two of a possible 12.

However, the match swung in Hradecka's favour thereafter, as Watson's serve deserted her. Her Czech opponent grew in confidence and ran out a deserved winner.

The main draw for the tournament takes place on Monday 28.
