World No. 2 Roger Federer moved safely through to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open by extending his career record over Igor Andreev to 4-0.

Andreev could not handle Federer's serve in his 7-5 7-6 defeat, winning just three points in the match when Federer's first serve went in.

Federer's standards slipped slightly in the second set when he was broken once but he forced a tie-break and won that 7-4 in a solid test for the Swiss early in the Indian Wells tournament.

Novak Djokovic had an easier path to the third round, routing Andrey Golubev 6-0 6-4 in under an hour.

The third seed also impressed when serving with Golubev winning just seven points on return throughout the short match.

American fans were disappointed to see Andy Roddick drawn against James Blake knowing that one of their favourites would have to exit, and it was Blake who made way, losing 6-3 7-5 to his countryman.

Seventh seed Tomas Berdych was another big name to make it through in straight sets, eliminating Lukasz Kubot 6-4 6-1.

Milos Raonic showed his potential again by toppling No. 12 seed Mardy Fish, the young Canadian making the most of his wildcard appearance as he rockets up the rankings.

Fish was the main casualty on Sunday as Stanislas Wawrinka, Jurgen Melzer and Marin Cilic also progressed.
