Second seed Stanislas Wawrinka was the only seeded player to lose his first round match at the BMW Open on Tuesday, as Nikolay Davydenko and Marin Cilic opened with wins.

Wawrinka was surprised by American qualifier Dustin Brown, who showed admirable strength and resolve to emerge winner in three sets, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-5.

Cilic rode an impressive 11 aces to victory over Simone Botelli 7-5, 7-6 (4), in a battle of two previous finalists in the event (Cilic in 2010, Botelli in 2008), while Davydenko - a former champion - was always in control as he saw off compatriot Andrey Kuznetsov 6-1, 7-6 (4).

Elsewhere, there were also wins for fifth seed Florian Mayer, Philip Kohlschreiber and Radek Stepanek.

At the Estoril Open, Juan Martin del Potro held his nerve to see off Portuguese qualifier Pedro Sousa in three sets, finally clinching a 6-2 3-6 6-3 triumph.

The Argentine, the 2009 US Open champion, was broken twice in a match that lasted nearly two hours, but proved the stronger of the two in the final set to move into the second round.

There he will be joined by Milos Raonic, who saw off Igor Andreev, and Thomaz Bellucci - although home favourite Pablo Andujar will not be involved after retiring hurt in the third set against Alejandro Falla with the scores level at 4-4.

Meanwhile, at the Serbia Open, the biggest shock saw fifth seed John Isner defeated by Ricardo Mello after a second set tiebreak.

However, Feliciano Lopez, Marcel Granollers and Illya Marchenko were among the first round winners in Belgrade - the latter defeating Ernests Gulbis 6-2 6-4 to progress.
