David Ferrer and Venus Williams are the new champions at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel after winning vastly different finals on Saturday local time.

Ferrer exacted revenge on his conqueror in the decider at Buenos Aires last week, Juan Carlos Ferrero, while Williams had to come from a set down to see off relative unknown Polona Hercog to make it back to back titles both this season and in this event.

Ferrero's run of 14 matches unbeaten finally ended as Ferrer triumphed 6-3 3-6 6-1 in one hour, 47 minutes. The loss prevented Ferrero from winning his third consecutive title, while Ferrer now holds a 6-2 head-to-head record over his good friend.

The match was typically even affair between the two, but after trading sets Ferrer took control of the deciding set by winning the first five games.

It would have taken a Herculean effort for Hercog to win her first title by overcoming Williams, but she certainly made real the possibility by taking the only two break point opportunities of the first set.

Williams had slipped up in most of her matches here, but when she found form, she was at her devastating best and Hercog couldn't get near the defending champion.

Even taking the match to the two-hour mark would have to be considered a success and a great learning experience for young Hercog, who was ranked 60th before this tournament. The 19-year-old Slovakian later won the doubles tournament, surely making Acapulco her new favourite destination.
