Keothavong wins AEGON International qualifier

World No. 110 Anne Keothavong was one of the few Britons to triumph in the first round of the AEGON International qualifiers on Saturday, beating Alize Cornet, who was seeded eighth.
Keothavong reached the second round of the Australian Open earlier in the year, before departing Roland Garros at the first hurdle. In a mixed year for the Brit, she saw off Cornet 6-4 6-2 to advance her AEGON International hopes.
Two of Great Britain's wildcards for Wimbledon, Naomi Broady and Emily Webley-Smith, were less successful, losing to Anabel Medina Garrigues and Anna Tatishvili in straight sets.
Anna Fitzpatrick also suffered defeat, departing 7-6(4) 6-2 to Bojana Jovanovski, while Alison Riske got the better of Katie O'Brien, the American cruising through in straight sets.
In the men's qualifying section, Sean Thornley pulled off the most impressive victory against fourth seed Julio Silva. Thornley came through an epic tiebreaker to win 7-6(10) 6-3.
Also victorious was Marcus Willis, who defeated Luca Gregorc 4-6 6-4 7-6(9), and Joshua Milton, who won the battle of the Brits 6-3 3-6 6-4 against Joshua Goodall.
Highly-rated youngster Oliver Golding narrowly missed out, exiting the qualifying process in three sets, losing 7-6(6) 5-6 6-4 against Marius Copil. Alexander Slabinsky overpowered James Feaver 7-6(3) 6-1 and James Marsalek eased past fellow Brit Toby Martin.
Elsewhere, Matthew Short lost to top seeded qualifier Rainer Schuettler, while David Rice, George Morgan and Chris Eaton also suffered defeat.
Later on, in the second round of qualifying, Milton lost to Denis Kudla, Slabinsky edged past Thornley, Marsalek was defeated 7-6(1) 7-5 by Russia's Denis Matsukevich and Willis crashed to top seed Schuettler.
