Andy Murray will be left flying the flag for Britain in the second round after all three British wildcards fell at the first hurdle on Tuesday.

Despite a strong showing from the British women, British No. 2 James Ward was unable to emulate the giant-killing form that saw him reach the semi-finals at Queen's a fortnight ago. Playing No. 19 seed Michael Llodra, Ward was a break up in the second, but failed to hang on as he fell to a 6-3 7-6(4) 6-3 defeat.

Daniel Evans battled valiantly, but fell in four sets to No. 20 seed Florian Mayer. Serving for the second set, Evans double faulted on break point to hand Mayer the chance to claw his way back, and despite winning the third, ultimately fell 7-6(5) 7-6(1) 3-6 6-4.

British No. 3 Daniel Cox bowed out in straight sets after a 6-2 6-4 6-4 defeat to Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky. Resuming after rain suspended play on Monday, Cox was unable to find a way back into the match against the world No. 46.
