Hurricanes and Wellington boss Greg Peters will take over the reins of SANZAR as the first full-time chief executive of the alliance between the South African, New Zealand and Australian unions.

Since its inception in 1996 there has been a rotation policy between the three countries in terms of the role, with Peters set to break the mould when he begins his new job on November 1 in Sydney.

He will oversee not only the first season of Super 15 rugby but also the inclusion of Argentina in the Tri-Nations in 2012. The partnership has been brought into keen focus during this season's Tri-Nations, with reports of a South African split surfacing following a series of high-profile spats.

He has been chief executive of the Hurricanes and Wellington RFU since 2006 and previously served SANZAR as tournament director. In 2003 and 2004 he managed the negotiation of a new broadcast deal, when the Sanzar secretariat was managed by the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU)

"Sanzar is in the midst of its largest transformation since its foundation with the expansion to 15 teams and a new conference-based model for Super Rugby, and the inclusion of Argentina from 2012 in a revamped Tri-Nations, so it's a vital time to evolve the off-field structures," SANZAR chairman Mike Eagle said.

"Greg brings a wealth of relevant experience and is well respected not only in New Zealand but in rugby circles across Sanzar so we believe he is the right person to lead us in this exciting growth phase for rugby in the southern hemisphere."
