Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal has accused All Blacks No.10 Dan Carter of making unreasonable wage demands in order to return to France after next year's World Cup.

Carter was afforded an unprecedented sabbatical from his contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) two years ago to link up with Top 14 outfit Perpignan. However, he played just five games for the Catalans after rupturing his Achilles tendon in a game against Stade Francais. In spite of the anti-climactic nature of his stint in France, Carter is said to be keen on a return at the end of next year.

Boudjellal, who has spared little expense in assembling one of the strongest sides in the Top 14, is interested in bringing the Crusaders ace to Toulon but he claims that Carter is asking for ridiculous money.

''Is this reasonable?'' Boudjellal mused in a column for L'Equipe. ''€1.2 million for Dan Carter a season for a three-year contract. Everyone is put off by that price. In the current climate of rugby, this has crossed the line."
