Jean-Eric Vergne has admitted Toro Rosso's main target for the first race in Australia is just to see the chequered flag.

Toro Rosso has had a stuttered its way through pre-season testing, with several issues trying to get the STR9 and its Renault power unit running reliably. After 61 laps at the wheel on Friday, Vergne said his team was heading to the first race with fairly low expectations in the hope of taking advantage of the high rate of attrition.

"I wish we could target something else, but definitely I think the real target will be to finish," he said. "Right now I think if we finish the race, we finish in the points. So that will be good."

Vergne said the final two days will be crucial for Toro Rosso and is hoping his last test day in the car on Sunday will allow him to run a race simulation.

"There is still a lot to do, but we can say we have made some steps forward and we must continue to do as much mileage as possible in the two days that are left," he said. "I will be back in the car on Sunday here, when I hope we will be in a position to do a qualifying and race simulation."
