Daniel Ricciardo's afternoon running in Barcelona was affected by a drive shaft problem, Toro Rosso has confirmed.

When heading out for his first run early in the afternoon session Ricciardo came to a halt at the end of the pit lane and caused the second red flag of the day. The car was swiftly returned to the Toro Rosso garage bit did not re-emerge until the final five minutes of the afternoon, meaning Ricciardo was only able to add five laps to his lunchtime tally.

The team has since confirmed that it was a drive shaft issue that prevented it running, but Ricciardo focused on a productive morning of tyre evaluations.

"The afternoon did not go to plan, but the morning was positive and we did all the runs we had planned for the first part of the day," Ricciardo said. "We worked on making adjustments to the car balance, also trying some different mechanical changes to the car, which is why I did mainly short runs. I could feel the effect of these changes and the car reacted in the way we expected."
