Just when it seemed UFC 136 could not possibly squeeze in another great match-up, Anthony Pettis v Jeremy Stephens has been added to the October 8 event.

Headlined by the lightweight title clash between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, UFC 136 also boasts several other high-profile bouts such as Jose Aldo v Kenny Florian, Chael Sonnen v Brian Stann, Demian Maia v Jorge Santiago, and Melvin Guillard v Joe Lauzon.

The strength of the card is such that Pettis v Stephens may not even force its way on to the main card. However, victory for either man would propel them back into contention in the lightweight division.

Pettis was heading for a title shot before he chose not to wait around for the winner of Edgar v Maynard - who were both injured at the time, preferring to stay active against Clay Guida. The former WEC champion suffered defeat, so now he needs to bounce back.

Stephens' only loss in his last five came against the in-form Guillard, and he has won his last two. As a hard-hitting striker, he should have the perfect style to create a hugely watchable war with Pettis come October 8.
