Chad Mendes has been boosted by the news he did not break a hand at UFC 133 at the weekend, allowing the featherweight to train his sights on the winner of the fight between Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian.

Mendes won a unanimous decision over Rani Yahya at the weekend, but it was feared the win came at a cost. The fighter's camp feared a broken hand, but a trip to the doctor for an X-ray revealed strained ligaments rather than a break.

Doctors have advised a two-week break from training, but it will not hinder his plans to step up the featherweight ranks. There has been no confirmation from UFC, but Mendes is viewed by some as the No. 1 contender and will have his eyes fixed on the fight between Aldo and Florian at UFC 136.

Aldo will face Florian in Houston on October 8. And it is expected that Mendes will be at the venue hoping president Dana White gives him the green light to take on the winner.
