Cormier still plans to fight in UFC heavyweight division

Daniel Cormier has expressed his intention to start life in the UFC as a heavyweight, despite Cain Velasquez's recent crowning as the division's champion.

Cormier and Velasquez, AKA team-mates, have made it abundantly clear they will never fight - regardless of the circumstances. Velasquez has been quoted as saying: "Anybody can watch us fight three times a week down at our gym".

After Velasquez beat Junior Dos Santos to become the heavyweight champion, it was speculated that Cormier - the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion - might turn his focus to the light-heavyweight terrain.

However, he still intends to beat Dion Staring on January 12 before targeting a collision with Frank Mir on April 20 in San Jose. The bout had been scheduled and then cancelled in the past, but Cormier still wants it as his UFC debut.

"I would love for it to be on the Fox show here in San Jose. April 20th, fight Frank Mir, on Fox, have it be a free broadcast and that will help expose me and get more fans behind me who may not know me," Cormier told FightHubTV.

"That is what I want right now. That is the fight I have trained for, and would be excited to train for it again; Mir wants the fight, I think it would be a great fight. It's like we are doing Joe Silva's job for him."
