Georges St-Pierre will defend his UFC welterweight title in front of a record 55,000 capacity crowd in Toronto after UFC 129 sold out.

St-Pierre takes on Jake Shields in the main event on April 30, and if he wins it is widely expected that the Canadian will step up to the middleweight division for a superfight with Anderson Silva.

GSP's destiny will play out in front of a booming crowd at the Rogers Centre, after tickets sold out immediately for the event.

"UFC continues to set new milestones," UFC president Dana White said. "We've sold 55,000 tickets in our first stadium event in Toronto and we continue to take the UFC to the next level."

A 55,000 attendance completely demolishes the UFC's previous record crowd, which came back in December at UFC 124, when 23,152 fans watched St-Pierre destroy Josh Koscheck.
