Daniel Ricciardo believes Red Bull is in the hunt for a podium at the US Grand Prix this weekend.

Ricciardo finished second practice fourth fastest but was over a second off the pace of the two Mercedes at the front of the field. Although he is not expecting to challenge for the top two position, he thinks he is in line for a third place finish.

"We're there or thereabouts," Ricciardo said. "It's about fighting for that last spot [on the podium] because the Mercedes are too quick, but that last spot looks pretty close."

Ricciardo said the wind played a big part in the practice session and that there was work left to do ahead of qualifying.

"I think we got it in a window we can work with, but the wind was pretty strong out there and because it's an open track you get affected quite a lot by that," he said. "Normally when there's wind you will never find a normal balance, because a head wind helps and a tail hurts the car a bit.

"In general the pace on the long runs wasn't bad and the low-fuel saw us sitting in the top five. So it wasn't a bad FP2 for us, normally we are on the back foot a bit and make a step overnight, but I think we've got a bit to work with."
