Rubens Barrichello admits that he wishes his Formula One future had been sorted out sooner, but that he was still "fighting" to retain his seat at Williams.

Barrichello is out of contract at Williams, and after the team endured the worst season in its history in 2011 it is considering its options. Pastor Maldonado has been retained for a second season on account of substantial backing from Venezuelan oil company PDVSA and Barrichello said that he's been trying to stay in a positive frame of mind as he awaits news on his own future.

"It's taking longer than I wish to be honest, but I've been thinking positively," Barrichello said on The Flying Lap. "I've always been this way; you've got to believe in things, even if they didn't happen just yet you've got to believe that they have happened in your mind."

Barrichello also said that he thinks he is one of three drivers in the frame for the seat, with the other two believed to be Bruno Senna and Adrian Sutil.

"I'm fighting for the position; I think there are two other drivers who have potential to be driving there at Williams but I feel that I'm quite a good candidate and I feel I should be driving there. There are lots of changes for the team; engine, there are new people around and what I've told people at Williams is experience comes quite gratis in a way, it's just there.

"But where are you going to find someone with my experience with so much of a will to do well? I still have so much feeling for the car and I want to drive it as fast as I can. I don't know how that is happening because when I was in my twenties I thought 'maybe when I'm 30 I'm done', I'm 39 and I'm still feeling [ready] to go so I think this is the best thing that can be happening to me right now and I hope that I will be driving this year."
