Lewis Hamilton admits he always had something extra in his pocket throughout the Australian Grand Prix after leading home a dominant Mercedes one-two in Melbourne.

Hamilton kicked off his world title defence with a lights-to-flag victory ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg, who never got within touching distance despite finishing 1.3s down. Rosberg stayed in close contention throughout and occasionally chipped away at Hamilton's lead, but the Brit admits he was managing everything to ensure he never got too close.

"Nico was very quick throughout the race and it was really about trying to manage fuel and also not knowing where the limit of the tyres was in terms of how far we can go," Hamilton said. "Once you get a two second gap you just try and manage that, there's no need to try and eek out more. But when Nico turned up the heat I was able to turn up the heat, which was good. Otherwise it was a phenomenal race for both of us, Nico drove really well and Sebastian [Vettel] must have done a great job to be where he is."

Hamilton was joined by Arnold Schwarzenegger on the podium and had some fun with the Austrian film star.

"My team did an amazing job today and it's an incredible feeling to continue on from last year, but also to be up here with you man … I thought you were taller! He was taller on The Terminator."

At the end of the televised interview segment, Schwarzenegger recited his most famous line and invited the world champion to join in.

"Well I know you are going to say, when it comes to the next race, 'I'll be back', right!? So let's say it together. [With Hamilton] I'll be back!"
