Mark Webber is expecting a close battle between the top teams at this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix after Red Bull showed some promising pace during Friday practice.

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg led the way after the first two practice sessions, 0.446s ahead of Webber in second. The fastest McLaren was a further 0.485s back in fourth, but Webber suspects the top three teams will be closer over the rest of the weekend.

"There are some quick cars out there - of course we don't know which fuel loads people were running, but it looks pretty tight again," he said. "Tyres will play a big role on Sunday in the race."

He said degradation was proving difficult to deal with, but does not think Red Bull is worse off than any other team.

"It was quite challenging out on track, trying to get everything together. The tyres were a bit of a surprise for everybody in terms of how they are behaving, they're losing their grip pretty quick, but that's the same for everybody."
