Lewis Hamilton said his qualifying session at the Bahrain Grand Prix was one of his best this season, despite missing out on pole position.

Hamilton has twice started from pole, but said his two laps in Bahrain to secure second place on the grid 0.098s behind Sebastian Vettel on pole were two of his best this year.

"Generally it was probably one of my best qualifying sessions even though in the past we went on pole position after the first lap [in Q3]," he said. "The first lap was great and the second lap was great. I'm quite happy with that and we just need to keep on pushing."

He said his set-up had been improving all weekend, but admitted he was relieved when he made it through Q1 with just one attempt on medium tyres after seeing Michael Schumacher knocked out in the first session.

"I'm very happy with the job that we've done," he added. "I was just trying to improve the set-up throughout the weekend and then in FP3 it wasn't the most spectacular, but a little bit closer in Q1 and thank goodness we got through."
