Shell has announced a multi-year deal to become the title sponsor of the Belgian Grand Prix, helping to secure the historic event's place on the Formula One calendar.

There have long been questions surrounding the future of the race at Spa Francorchamps, as escalating hosting fees threaten to price the circuit out of the market. But the news of the new deal, which is part of an extended partnership between Shell and the Formula One Group, should help to allay fears.

"By becoming the title sponsor of the 2011 Formula One Shell Belgian Grand Prix, Shell continues to prove its commitment to the sport and play a key role in its enduring success." Bernie Ecclestone said."We recognise the valuable contribution made by Shell over many years and are delighted to provide an environment for this global brand to develop its commercial products."

Shell has also renewed its long-standing partnership with Ferrari until 2015.
