Amir Khan's team were told their man had won his fight against Lamont Peterson - only to then hear that the decision had gone the American's way, according to Khan's manager, Asif Vali.

Khan surrendered his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles on a split points decision in Peterson's native Washington DC on Saturday. After the contest, Khan slammed referee Joe Cooper, who deducted him two points for pushing - without those penalties, the Brit would have kept his titles.

Before the judges' verdict was announced, there was a delay of close to ten minutes - and Vali claims that late alterations were made to the scores.

"We were told in the ring at the final bell that Amir had won the fight but then, incredibly, just before Michael Buffer announced the decision, we were told 'Hang on, we have made a mistake in the counting'," Vali said in the Daily Star.

"It took about eight minutes for everything to be sorted out with the decision eventually going to Peterson. We demanded to see the original cards but were denied that opportunity. Then, when the final overall card from all the judges was shown to us, there were crossings out and we saw that change in round seven."

Khan added on Sky Sports: "I don't know why it took so long [to announce the result]. If they thought he won fair and square then I don't know why it took so long from the judges to get the scorecards out there. But this is boxing, you live another day. I'm going to go to the gym, sit down with my team and see where we go from here.

"We all know who won the fight. I've even had a few of the commissioners coming up to me and saying that was a disgusting decision."
